Erasmus in Huelva: complete 2026 guide
📅 April 18, 2026 · 10 min read
Heading to Huelva for Erasmus? Great choice. It's one of Spain's least touristy cities with a quality public university, warm climate, beaches 20 minutes away, and costs 15-25% lower than Seville or Madrid.
University of Huelva (UHU)
UHU has two main campuses: El Carmen (humanities, sciences, education) in the city, and La Rábida (engineering) in Palos de la Frontera. About 10,000 students total — family-sized, direct contact with professors.
Erasmus groups are small (15-40 students/year), making it easy to integrate quickly.
Before arriving: essential paperwork
- Learning Agreement signed (before leaving your university)
- Grant Agreement (Erasmus+ funding document)
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private health insurance
- Passport/ID valid
- European bank account (Spanish one recommended: Santander, CaixaBank, Sabadell offer no-fee student accounts)
- UHU admission document (they send it when accepted)
Accommodation: 3 main options
1. University dorms
UHU has some spots in partner residences. Pros: meals included, clear process. Cons: €500-700/month, less independence.
2. Classic shared flat
Cheapest (€250-350/room). You manage everything: utilities, cleaning, roommate dynamics. Usually via Facebook groups or Idealista.
3. Coliving
Professionally-managed room with services (like Colivea). Utilities, Wi-Fi, community cleaning, maintenance. Month-to-month flexibility. Typically €380-470/month.
First 2 weeks in Huelva: paperwork checklist
- Padrón (register as resident) at City Hall. Need rental contract or landlord letter. Required for many later processes.
- NIE (if stay >3 months): appointment at Huelva Foreign Office.
- UHU enrollment: Office of International Relations (ORI).
- Transport card: BonoBus Joven with discounts.
- Student card: library, gym, cafeteria access, discounts.
Social life & travel
- Beaches: Punta Umbría, Mazagón, Isla Cristina (20-40 min by bus)
- Nature: Doñana National Park next door
- Tapas & drinks: Paseo de la Ría area and Concepción/Berdigón streets
- ESN Huelva: organizes trips (Portugal, Morocco, Seville) and weekly parties
Realistic monthly Erasmus budget
- Room: €380-450
- Food: €200
- Transport: €25
- Leisure + trips: €150-250
- Phone (Lowi/Digi): €10-15
- Total: €765-940/month
Erasmus+ grant typically covers 50-70% of these expenses depending on home country.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Paying room deposits to foreign accounts (scam risk)
- Not registering padrón (complicates other procedures)
- Signing 12-month contracts without early-exit clause
- Not joining ESN (you miss the whole Erasmus social scene)
- Not learning basic Spanish (most locals in Huelva don't speak English)
How to book without getting scammed
- Demand signed contract (not just WhatsApp)
- Don't pay to foreign accounts
- Live visit or live video call (not just photos)
- Check landlord has Spanish fiscal address
- Deposit always refundable
